Redefining Beautiful

The first time I saw her true beauty she was in profile.

Raised on a ranch in northern Montana, she wasn’t dressed in the latest fashion. Her hair wasn’t stiff from hairspray; her face wasn’t slathered in makeup and her eyebrows weren’t tweezed beyond recognition.

Rather, she was appropriately dressed for the occasion, her hair was short and simple, and she wore glasses; not exactly someone Hollywood would classify as “beautiful.” But I thought she was stunning – which made me realize two things.

  1. After spending 15+ years in Hollywood my idea of beautiful had really become screwed up;
  2. The time has come for all of us to redefine what beautiful really means!

So today I want you to introduce you to two more women whom I consider to be beautiful: Jen and Justine.

Jen GerlachBorn and raised in Maryland, Jen is an East Coast girl living the “Green Acres” life … in Montana! The wife of a pastor, and the mother of three very active little boys, Jen is a stay-at home mom who supports her husband and his growing ministry; home schools her boys; runs the crib ministry at her church, grows vegetables in her garden and continually creates healthy meals for herself and her family. In fact, this summer Jen even helped this city girl grow carrots herself! Warm, nurturing and content to remain in the background preferring, instead, to focus on the needs of her family, Jen is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside, and the perfect definition of a “quiet and gentle spirit.”

JustineMarried at 19, Justine is the true embodiment of a Montana girl. Born and raised in Big Sky country, Justine and her siblings were not only home-schooled together, but they now all work together in the family business: a local bedding company that makes the most amazing mattresses (two of which have found their way into my own home). Seemingly the proverbial girl-next-door, the first thing you notice about Justine is her smile because it always enters a room before she does! But dig a little deeper and you will discover a beautiful woman with a passion for God, who loves her husband, loves her family and could teach Miley Cyrus a thing or two about what it means to be a role model to the young women of today!

Let’s be honest: I still love the entertainment industry and there are many days when I actually miss the hustle and bustle of living in Los Angeles. However, I have also come to realize that I am at a very different stage in my life right now as compared to when I was a Hollywood agent. As a result – and because I have five nieces ranging in age from 16 to 20 – I have also realized that now, more than ever, the time has come for all of us to take another look at how we define beauty, because it is so much more than the skeletal images of celebrities being presented to us in today’s fashion and beauty magazines.

Are you ready to redefine beautiful?

If so, then let’s do it together!
